PROJECT OVERVIEW

The City of Powell River will begin construction on the building envelope renewal for the Powell River Public Library starting from the week September 2, 2025. This project is anticipated to take approximately 11 weeks to complete.

Sioux Projects Ltd. has been engaged to carry out the work, which will involve removing the existing stucco and stone veneer and replacing it with a new painted fiber cement cladding system.

While the project will include disruptive activities such as demolition and general construction, there are no planned interruptions to library or second floor services as a result of this project.

We appreciate the community's patience as we undertake these important improvements to the facility.

Powell River Public Library - Building Envelope Renewal (Proposed Elevation Drawings)

WHY IS THIS NECESSARY?

There are two components to this project.

One component is addressing the failed stucco siding on the east and south elevations. This scope was identified as a necessary action as a result of a 2017 consulting report in response to leaks in the building.

The other component this work is addressing the failing stone veneer. Due to safety and building performance issues caused by the recent pieces of stone veneer detaching from the building, the City must undertake full replacement of the siding material.

PROJECT TIMELINE

The project is scheduled to start the week of September 2, 2025 and continue for approximately 11 weeks (subject to unforeseen circumstances) between the hours of 7am - 7pm.

While there is anticipated to be some noise disruption, dust and debris during the project, the Powell River Public Library and the various organizations that occupy the units above the library will remain open as usual.

HOW IS THIS PROJECT BEING FUNDED?

This project is being funded through the Powell River Community Forest and the Canada Community Building Fund in the following amounts:

  • $312,837 - Powell River Community Forest
  • $42,555 - Canada Community Building Fund
