The City of Powell River is pleased to announce the commencement of the Maple and Sycamore Safe Streets project, a significant initiative designed to enhance pedestrian and cycling safety within the Townsite area.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by Monday, September 30,subject to weather conditions.
This project is a direct response to the concerns of many residents and is part of our broader goal to improve walking, cycling, and rolling connections between Townsite and Westview.
Project Timeline:
Construction begins: Wednesday, August 21, 2024
Anticipated completion: Monday, September 30, 2024 (weather permitting)
Project Goals:
Create a safer environment for all users, especially children.
Improve pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
Implement traffic calming measures.
Project Features:
Curb extensions
Painted sidewalks
30 km/h zone implementation
New signage
Construction Considerations:
To minimize disruption to schools, construction will begin at the Brooks Secondary end of Maple Avenue.
Leighton Contracting, the project contractor, will implement comprehensive traffic management plans with dedicated personnel for enhanced safety.
Construction activities will encompass excavation, concrete work, asphalt paving, pavement marking, and new signage installation.
Working hours are from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday.
Project Funding:
The Maple and Sycamore Safe Streets project is funded through a collaborative effort, receiving grants from:
Province of British Columbia - Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program ($357,000)
Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) ($37,000)
Powell River Community Forest Reserve ($248,113)
