Starting this fall, the City of Powell River is completing our transition to a fully automated curbside collection system. Following the successful rollout of automated garbage and organics curbside service, we are now bringing the same efficiency and convenience to your recycling.

The most visible change is the arrival of your new standardized, heavy-duty wheeled recycling cart issued by the City. They are designed to be lifted by the automated arm of the collection truck, making the process faster and safer.

WHAT'S NEW

WHAT GOES WHERE

The City follows Recycle BC's guidelines around what goes in your blue cart, as well as other tools to make your recycling easy.

Recycle BC focuses specifically on residential plastics, metal, packaging and paper. Items accepted for recycling are as follows:

  • 🧴 Plastic containers, bottles, jars, tubs, pails (), and garden pots

  • ♼ Paper and Carboard Newspapers, magazines, boxes, paper bags, and shredded paper

  • Cartons & Paper Cups - Dairy cartons, broth cartons, and coffee cups

  • 🥫 Metal cans, foil, food tins, aluminum foil, and aerosol cans (empty)

  • 🥳 Single Use Packaging-like Items - Paper party décor, plastic plant pots, and plastic cutlery

  • Glass bottles & Jars Clear and coloured glass, flexible plastics, overwrap, foam packaging, batteries, light bulbs, paint, oils, and electronics are not accepted for curbside recycling. These items go to the Resource Recovery Centre.

  • Recyclables must be inside the cart for collection. Recycling will not be collected if it's in plastic bags, alongside or in separate bins.

Properly sorting your recyclables according to the Recycle BC guidelines ensures that materials like paper and plastic can be successfully repurposed instead of ending up in a landfill.

HELPFUL TOOLS

The Waste Wizard online search tool helps residents determine how to properly dispose of recycling, compost and garbage waste items. By entering the name of an item, the tool provides specific instructions on whether it goes in the garbage, recycling, compost, or to a special depot. Key aspects of the Waste Wizard:

  • What it does: It provides instant sorting information for items like electronics, plastics, hazardous materials, and organic waste.
  • App Integration: It is available via the qathet Waste Wise app on Apple and Google Play stores, allowing for in-app searching, or on the City of Powell River website

Beyond the Wizard, the app provides personalized garbage/recycling/organics schedules and service alerts. The tool aids in reducing contamination in recycling and compost streams and helps manage items that cannot go into regular curbside carts.

CART PLACEMENT

THE "1-3-1" RULE

  • 1 Metre Apart: between the garbage, recycling, and organic carts.

Initially, only the City-issued 240L cart may be used for curbside collection to ensure compatibility with automated lifting equipment. Please note the following guidelines regarding capacity:

    • Trial Period: Residents are asked to use the standard 240L cart for at least two months to assess their actual needs.
    • Upgrades: After the trial period, large households requiring additional volume may request to exchange their 240L cart for a larger 360L model.
    • Overflow: Any recycling exceeding the capacity of the city-issued cart must be self-hauled to a local recycling depot, as private carts will not be serviced.
