Consultation has concluded

The BC Wildfire Service has applied for a development variance permit for their two areas of land they lease from the City at the Powell River Airport. If the variance is approved, it would allow for a set of stairs to be built over the shared interior lease boundary as part of the planned installation of a new modular building on one of their lease areas.

In 2023, BC Wildfire Service secured a new lease area, neighbouring their existing lease area which currently houses their existing fire base operations. They have been planning an expansion of their operations onto this new lease area, and part of the plan is to install a new modular building on the land. They would like to build a set of stairs connecting this new building to the existing building. Which means that the set of stairs would be placed over the shared lease area boundary and would be projecting into the side setback and encroaching on the older lease area land. In order to support the planned construction, BC Wildfire service has applied for a development variance permit requesting to relax the side setback requirements from 3m to 0m in the M2 (Airport and Service Industrial) zone for both of their lease areas.

Council will consider granting approval for issuance of Development Variance Permit 286 at its May 8, 2025, regular meeting. Anyone who feels they may be affected by the proposed variance can make written submission to Mayor and Council. Submissions may be emailed to planningservices@powellriver.ca, mailed to City Hall, 6910 Duncan Street, Powell River, BC, V8A 1V4, or delivered in person to City Hall. All written submissions must be received no later than 2 pm on May 8, 2025.

As always, residents are welcome to reach out directly to Planning Services staff with any additional questions or concerns. Our offices can be reached at 604-485-8650 or planningservices@powellriver.ca.
